Wasserbillig

2 June 2015:  Shortly before our departure for this hike, a friend in Saint-Germain-en-Laye invited us to look for the continental divide between the land of beer and the land of wine, which may be hard to find.  ("Dans cette traversée N-S vous allez passer des pays de la bière à ceux du vin. La ligne de partage n'est pas si facile à trouver.")  I agreed that this was an important question for research and assured him that I would study the matter assiduously and on a daily basis.  ("Je pense que cette question de la ligne de partage des libations mérite d’être étudiée en profondeur — et ce quotidiennement.  Je m’en occuperai...")

Not a day has passed without further research on this topic.  I'm now in a position to report on my findings.  Upon arrival in Vianden a few days ago, I was pleased to discover a new dark beer, Diekirch Grand Cru.  The next day, the excellent Hotel Terrace in Bettendorf had little to offer in beer, but we had a fine bottle of Luxembourg Pinot Gris wine with dinner.  It's still possible to find Diekirch here and there (but not at our hotel this evening in Wasserbillig, which offered only a run-of-the-mill lager), but the land of page-long beer menus is well behind us.  Today, approaching Wasserbillig at the end of our hike from Ralingen, we saw our first vineyards on the slopes above the Sûre River.  The Sûre flows into the Moselle here.  We will follow the Moselle for the next few days – great wine land par excellence.

In short, we have, indeed, crossed the important continental divide between beer and wine; I would draw the line between Diekirch and Wasserbillig:  Cheers!

Leaving Ralingen and crossing the Sûre back to Luxembourg, we plunged again into delightful forest trails.

A new sight for us: traffic cones along a trail in the middle of a forest, warning of a big hole caused by the fall of a tree.

We did have to walk on a road for a short distance:

An interesting feeding stall for calves; the entry way is too small for full-grown cows.

The trail passed a big, noisy and dusty quarry:

Vineyards!
