Barr

22 June 2015:  Today was a great day of forest hiking.  The trail traversed steep slopes from Le Hohwald to the monastery at Mont Sainte-Odile, where we stopped for lunch.  The trail then descended gradually through the forest and past vineyards to Barr, a picturesque city on the edge of the Alsatian plain.

The trail leaving Le Hohwald:

One of the highlights of hiking around Mont Sainte-Odile is the extraordinary Mur Païen, probably built in the 7th century:

There were still many big rocks left over after the building of the wall!

The Monastery and hotel at Mont Sainte-Odile:

A terrible airplane crash occurred near here in January 1992.

Hiking in the forest after lunch:

Approaching Barr:

The grapes are ripening!

Hôtel de la Maison Rouge:

We enjoyed a bottle of Riesling, made by the wine producer Gilg that we visited on Saturday with Marie and Didier.

We sampled tarte flambée, an Alsatian specialty.
