Thann

2 July 2015:  The heat wave (canicule) gripped France today.  Temperatures in Alsace soared through the 30s, reaching 41, according to a sign in Thann where we stopped today.

Several days ago, we decided to hike a half-day and stop in Thann around noon today.  We are planning several short hikes in the coming days, in order to be in Giromagny on Monday when the post office is open.  (We need to pick up a letter containing the topoguide for the Jura that was sent to us, poste restante, in Giromagny by our friend and helper Marilyn from base camp in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.)  The alternative was to schedule two long days of hiking in order to arrive in Giromagny Saturday morning. The current heat wave has confirmed the wisdom of reducing the pace for a few days!

As we approached Thann, we recalled spending a night there at the Hôtel de France during our 1989 hike.  We wondered if the hotel still exists?  We walked into the center of town – and found it!  Naturally, that's where we are staying tonight.

Today's hike was an easy, 2.5 hour walk downhill through forests.  We still felt the heat!

Approaching Thann:

Thann has a beautiful church.

There are many possibilities for hiking in this area:
