Saint-Hippolyte

9 July 2015:  As mentioned in my blog post yesterday, Mary took a day off from hiking today, to restore her health, while I returned to the GR5.  Mary took a bus from Montbéliard to Saint-Hippolyte, while I took a bus to Dasle (southeast of Montbéliard), where I could connect with the GR5 and hike to Saint-Hippolyte.

Things did not go entirely according to plan:

The hike from Dasle to Saint-Hippolyte was good most of the way – indeed, quite interesting along the Franco-Swiss border – and the weather was much better for hiking (temperatures mostly below 20), but the hike turned out to take much longer than anticipated.  In order to arrive in Saint-Hippolyte in time for dinner, I hitchhiked to skip the last hour of hiking.

Mary's travel to Saint-Hippolyte went smoothly, but her recovery did not.  She's not yet ready for more hiking.  We're considering options for tomorrow and the coming days...

Departure from Dasle, after a bus ride from Montbéliard:

This morning's forest trail:

Le Pont Sarrazin:

Three generations of GR markers: broad, roughly painted stripes; small, neatly painted stripes; and a plaque nailed to the support (partly obscuring the earlier marker).

Dignified Montbéliard cattle:

There were numerous boundary stones (bornes) along the Franco-Swiss border.   Most were old ones, dated 1817, while some were more recent additions, dated in the 1930s.  The old stones had the coat of arms of the Canton of Bern carved on the Swiss side, and most had an F carved on the French side.  However, a couple of those old stones had a fleur-de-lys carved on the French side (as one might expect for a symbol of national sovereignty created in 1817).  It appeared, in fact, that the Fs had been carved into the stones at some later date in place of existing fleurs-de-lys.

Hiking in the afternoon, sometimes on forest trails; sometimes across open fields.

Note the clouds!  The temperature dropped by about 20 degrees today.
