Modane

19 August 2015:  Today was a tough day, with two important variables in play: the trail and the weather.

We started with a hike from the Refuge Péclet-Polset (2474 m.) to the Col de Chavière (2796 m. – the highest pass that we will cross on our hike).  It was a good trail with few technical challenges, albeit quite steep on crumbly scree in the final approach to the pass.  However, the small patches of blue sky disappeared as we climbed.  The temperature dropped and the wind rose as we climbed to the pass.  We added clothing, and, needless to say, we did not linger at the pass!

The weather gradually improved as we hiked down from the Col de Chavière to Modane (1058 m.), but it was a long way down – more than 1700 m. of elevation change (dénivelé).  Parts of the trail were smooth and easy, but other sections, especially at the end, were rough and difficult.  Our knees and ankles suffered.  At least the scenery around us, especially in the upper basin, was beautiful...

The trail dropped below the tree line, and, for awhile, we walked along a pleasant forest trail.

Arrival in Modane, where we got a room at the Le Perce Neige Hôtel.

  1. More spectacular photos. Fascinating geology. Anyone who sees what you're doing will want to do the same. If only I had two real legs!
