Rather than hike today to Montgenèvre (my original plan), I walked to nearby Névache. I lingered there over lunch at a pleasant restaurant, Le Creux des Souches, reading and writing blog entries. Then, mid-afternoon, our friends Marie & Didier (who have an apartment in Montgenèvre, where I'll spend two nights) and Anne-Laure & Tony (pausing here on their drive home from Italy) picked me up, and we drove up the Vallée de la Clarée to a parking area at 2030 m. Undeterred by steady rain and thickening fog – and led by the indomitable Didier – we walked from there up a rocky path to the Seuil des Rochilles (ca. 2430 m.). It's a beautiful valley, even with limited visibility. The prospect of a fine dinner at the Ferme Auberge du Clot, a cosy restaurant in Névache, kept our spirits high as we walked back to the car. We joined Anna & Uli (friends of Marie & Didier) at the restaurant. It was a festive occasion!
